Kelly, thank you very much, glad you like it Jessica, also wanted to say good job on the Maddox pieces. Those were very fun to do, hope you had fun doing them as well.
So in reference to your critique Jessica, not only is your gallery very nice and more technically polished than mine, but you made some good suggestions for this piece. It's anything but perfect. I would explain shortly that this is Tyrael, who is an angel in the Diablo game series. He's basically a super strong character with tube like, lighted wings that fan out into translucent ones and a bunch of armor. The dragon is Deathwing, a black dragon that is meant to be the incarnation of Earth in the Warcraft universe. He was corrupted by the baddies and so his earth aspect takes on the form of fire and lava, since that's kind of what creates earth. He was quite a challenge to draw. He also wears metal armor to contain his energy, including a protruding jaw piece that is quite tricky to get in perspective. There is also a drawing error on his far side with the scales and horns. The perspective is off and that may be lending to a flat look. I also think I was worried so much about making him glow and making his breath contrast his scales that I forgot to add a sense of spacial depth just in the picture frame. I only really added it towards the edge of the composition. Color balance was tricky too. Tyrael does glow an electric blue and Deathwing does glow red on black, so integrated this was not easy. I also looked at a lot of blizzard art and noticed they tend to favor a separation of color, so I tried to emulate that. The reflected light could be much more intense, I agree, and maybe some red on Tyrael would have been nice. As for the wings, a guideline in illustrator is a good idea, and I am very good at the pen tool, so I may use this method for delicate long shapes like this in the future. I will mention though that the style I'd like my illustrations to go in is impressionistic and painterly, so although this piece may be a slightly sloppy version of it, I want to explore this painting style further. Using guidelines however, could still help so I appreciate that input. I often go back and forth between photoshop and illustrator when drawing and I didn't for this one. Perhaps that was my mistake.
oh, and I so wish I had some figures of Tyrael to use. I did use other dragon and person figures, but they were so far off of what I needed I decided to look for online reference instead. Real life reference is always a great tool, I'll have to try my best to get that for future illustrations.
I hope you watch my page, I'll make sure to watch yours. I'm out of school and this is a great time for me to do more finished illustrations. I learned so much in just this one piece, to the point that you may notice an inconsistency in paint application throughout the piece. I want to do more pieces and improve in the near future to improve my portfolio, so hopefully some of these problems will be less persistent in future pieces.
Dang, I didn't even notice the names in the title of the piece. I would have looked them up, and could have avoided sounding like a doofus when describing the characters (red guy and glowing angelic warrior guy, haha). Thanks for enlightening me.
Thanks for checking out my gallery. I think what it really needs is more pieces depicting awesome scenes, like this one.
Nice analysis. I'm glad you learned so much with this painting.
I also try to keep things looking more organic than mechanical, so yeah, just tracing the guides you make in Photoshop should work. As far as making the wings totally vector, I don't think I'd even bother bringing it into Illustrator unless it proved to be too complicated, or if the pen tool in Photoshop is super different (which I think I've heard). I know doing vector in Photoshop is usually pretty taboo (dealing with typography and layout is a no brainer, there), but in a case like that, I think you could get away with it.
Hope all is well in Hawaii, and I'll see you around on DeviantArt.
Deathwing wins
This epic battle pretty goes well with this music:
